$50 Dreamhost Promo Code

We have created a coupon / promo code for Dreamhost.  It is “CADTIMES08“  We switched from GoDaddy to Dreamhost, and have loved it (not that there is anything wrong with GoDaddy).  If you use our promo code “CADTIMES08“, you get $50 off any hosting order.

For example, 1 year pre-paid hosting (500 GB storage, increases weekly by 2 GB, and 5.0 TB bandwidth, increases weekly by 40 GB) is $119.40 - $50 = $69.40

So use “CADTIMES08” and save $50 off any hosting order.

Free Ride to Autodesk University

On 10/4/07, Shaan Hurley, made a shocking announcement.  Members of the MyFeedback community will have the chance to win a free trip to Autodesk University.  All that is required, is a submission, stating why *you* should be the one to win.  It was suggested that the submissions be of a humorous nature.  The deadline for submissions is October 26th at 2:00 PM PST.

In order to be considered, you need to go to the MyFeedback website, and sign up.  When you sign up, you fill out a survey with your Autodesk interests.  In a few days, you should receive an invitation to participate in one of the beta projects.  Once you are a member, you can read Shaan’s post with the directions on how to submit your entry.

My Submission

It was suggested that the entries for the free AU pass, be funny.  However, I’ve been told many times, that I’m not really funny.  So I figured the next best thing to funny, was frightening.  And what could be more scary than someone sitting outside your ranch (aka house) waiting to speak with you, and demanding they give you what you want.  I would like to thank Cindy Sheehan for this bit of inspiration.  My wife suggested that I think this idea through.  When I started thinking about the logistics of waiting to speak to Shaan (my wife called it stalking), it may not be as good of an idea as it sounds.  Here’s why…

First of all, I live in Atlanta.  And we know from some of Shaan’s previous posts, he lives in Utah.  Somewhere in the greater Salt Lake area.  So I would have to fly to the Salt Lake area (approximately $750 if I left 10/7/07).  I would then need a car and supplies.  I figure it will take 2 weeks for Shaan to break down an give me a free ride to AU.

Plane Ticked: $750

Car Rental: $200

Food (@ $40/day): $560

Folding Chair:  $20

Suncreen: $20 (I’m really pale)

Video Camera: $500 (for proof of tasering)

Bail Bond:  $1,000

Lawyer to fight restraining order:  $5,000

Total:  $8,050

Since it would only cost $1,645 (Early Bird Rate) or $2,145 (Regular Rate), this idea isn’t as good as it initially sounded.  I might not have to pay for AU, but it would cost me $8,050 to go for free.  So paying for AU would give me a savings of at least $5,905.

DISCLAIMER:  This is all in jest.  I am NOT condoning waiting to speak with someone (some people call it stalking).  Shaan, if you have someone sitting out side your ranch (house), it’s not me.  I have witnesses.

Autodesk Lawsuit Update

Tim Vernor sent us an update on his case.  It appears that all the attention he has received has helped.  An attorney for Public Citizen Litigation Group has agreed to represent him against Autodesk.  Go to their website, www.citizen.org, to get updates on the case.  You can sign up for email updates as well.  The Litigation Group’s website can be found here.

Site Upgrade/Screw Up & New Feature

Well, if you’ve seen the site, you’ll know what the title means.  We had to upgrade the site, and in the process, screwed stuff up.  So we’ll be working on brining the previous posts and comments over.  Unfortunately, the automatic process did not work.  So bear with us as we sort through the wonderful world of SQL databases.

As for the new feature, we’ve added a wiki for site development/civil engineering.  It will be developing as the weeks go by, so check back for updates.

And as always, if you have any comments or suggestions, the email address is: podcast@cadtimes.com

New Category: Blogs

Blogs are one of the best sources for information out there, so we’ve just added a new blog category.  So if there’s a blog you read daily, a blog that always has good information, or a blog that is just funny, submit it.

New Feature: Suggestions

We’ve added a new feature: Suggestions.  To make a suggestion for the site, or for anything you would like to see, simply submit a story without at URL, and add it to the “Suggestions” category.  We’ll try to implement all the suggestions, and we’ll work on ones with the most votes first.

Welcome to CADTIMES

CADTIMES is a new website devoted to finding the best CAD/Engineering related news.

How It Works:  You submit any news article, blog post, or newsgroup discussion you find is interesting or valuable, and other users vote on the story.  As more and more people read the story or try the tip, they vote the story up or down.  So when you’re looking for help on a particular subject, you can find the best story, as voted by other users.   No more searching all the websites or trying all the different tips.  You know what works and what is valuable based on the votes of your peers.
